WHY THIS EXISTS

It started at the Grand Canyon.

In May 2026, I drove my family out to the Grand Canyon. Somewhere between the glare, the heat, and the crowds, the whole idea found me.

I had my selfie stick out the entire trip, and everywhere I looked, everyone else did too — phones up, trying to catch the moment. And everyone was fighting the same thing I was: sun blowing out the screen so you couldn't see a thing, heat, and rain that sent people scrambling to cover their phones. Great shots, lost to the weather.

A few nights later, I had a dream about it. A selfie stick with its own little canopy built right in — shade for your screen, cover for your lens, hands free. In the dream a stranger walked by and said how cool it was. I woke up thinking: that's the answer.

Funny detail — on the way out there, we drove part of Route 66, and it's turning 100 this year. Born in 1926, and here I was in 2026. I'm not superstitious about it, but it made me smile, and it stuck with me.

I didn't sit on it. Within days I filed a provisional patent, and I started designing the real thing — teaching myself the CAD, printing prototype after prototype at my kitchen table, testing what worked and throwing out what didn't.

I'm not a big company. I'm one person — an engineer with a demanding day job — building this at night and on weekends. My youngest son, who's heading to Texas A&M for engineering, got hooked on it early and has been my right hand and my sounding board ever since. This is a family project as much as anything.

The Selfie Shade is me solving a problem I lived, the way I wished someone already had. If you've ever lost a shot to the sun or the rain, you're exactly who I'm building it for.
